Dear Statue of Liberty: Ellis Island Foundation Members,<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

I would like to nominate Milan M. Karlo, an American citizen of Serbian ancestry for the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.\u00a0 I know of no other who has made so many contributions to American Serbs over such a sustained period of time.\u00a0 Milan Karlo’s entire adult life has been spent perpetuating and preserving the Serbian cultural and religious heritage in America.\u00a0 He, best of all others, has exemplified the ideals of his beloved America, while cherishing the values and tenets of his Serbian background<\/span>.<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>

He wasn’t born deaf, but he was totally deaf by the time he was sixteen.\u00a0 He was hungry many times while growing up in Larkins Way alley of Pittsburgh’s South Side, home to most of the Jones and Laughlin steel mill workers and their families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Achievements<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Yet this son, born March 7, 1913 to Serbian pioneer immigrants,\u00a0Stana and Samojilo Karajlovich,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0overcame such handicaps and rose to become the\u00a0English Section Editor and official professional Photographer of the American SRBOBRAN<\/strong><\/span>, a Pittsburgh-based fraternal newspaper that went to approximately 50,000 homes of Serbian ancestry throught the United States and Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He was editor of his own magazine\u00a0AMERICAN SERB LIFE,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0editor of the\u00a0Diocesan OBSERVER<\/strong><\/span>, and author of the newly published book,\u00a0EARLY DAYS: SERBIAN SETTLERS IN AMERICA.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

A Quick Thinker<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>

Milan showed his quick thinking abilities early in life.\u00a0 He had gone to school with many of the more prominent and affluent children of the neighborhood.\u00a0 Unkindly, they would tease the less fortunate first-generation immigrant children with taunts or phrases such as,\u00a0“Last night we had pork chops and tonight we’re having steaks!”<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0 While the seven younger children in his family just\u00a0 looked on pathetically, Milan quickly said,\u00a0“Why that’s nothing!\u00a0 Last night we had gra i kupus and TONIGHT, tonight we’re having kupus i gra!”<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0And he said it with such an air of nobility, that the hecklers thought it was a dish of Royalty!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The younger and formerly embarrassed Serbian children now rolled their eyes and smiled Cheshire grins at their tormentors.\u00a0 How could these\u00a0“Keksari”<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(cake eater) show-offs have known that he had\u00a0beans and sauerkraut one night, and sauerkraut and beans the next, and the next, and the next night too?<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

A Man’s Character Formed When Young<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Young Milan worked hard as a young boy, selling newspapers on the corner for two cents a copy.\u00a0 The boy who warmed himself from the cold winter snow in front of a homemade oil barrel furnace always\u00a0prided himself on never being “Short” when it came time to paying his employer<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0the weekly collections.\u00a0 Even then, Milan was priased for his\u00a0Honesty, Integrity and Hard Work Ethic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0From paper boy to editor…. why even the Pittsburgh Press and Post-Gazette recognized Milan’s outstanding accomplishments despite his handicaps in a feature Sunday ROTO magazine article enititled\u00a0“His Eyes Are His Ears.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

No One Can Write Like Karlo Did!<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

While holding the post with the\u00a0American SRBOBRAN<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0for twenty years from the 1940’s to the 1960’s (with a few years at the copy desk of the\u00a0San Francisco Chronicle<\/strong><\/span>), Milan traveled the myriad Serbian colonies throughout the United States and Canada, capturing human interest stories of Serbian immigrants whether in Gary Indiana; Steelton, Pennsylvania, or Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

He wrote of steel mill workers and musicians, of coal miners and farmers.\u00a0 He and his cameras were recognized by young and old alike, as he photographed and wrote about the American-Serb mushball, basketball, golf and bowling tournaments, year after exciting year.<\/span><\/p>

Hundreds of faithful readers mourned his leaving the Pittsburgh-based newspaper, and echoes of\u00a0“No one can write like Karlo did,”<\/em><\/strong><\/span>\u00a0are still heard throughout the land at various Serbian functions.<\/span><\/p>

Milan Moves To Libertyville, IL<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Milan then moved to the Mid-West, heading up the\u00a0Diocesan OBSERVER<\/strong><\/span>, another newspaper printed in both Serbian and English which helped to preserve the heritage of the American born Serb, while at the same time, aided in easing the lonliness felt by some of the newly-arrived Yugoslavian immigrants.\u00a0 The\u00a0OBSERVER<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0also helped the new immigrants make the transition and assimilation into their new homeland more readily.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>

During his term with the\u00a0OBSERVER (or American SRBOBRAN)<\/strong><\/span>, Milan met and walked with kings and princes, Bishops, famous contractors, lawyers, politicians, and just plain good folks, and he wrote about them all. He made each of these stories “come alive”- with his wonderful writing abilitilies.<\/span><\/p>

Although Milan had no formal college degrees except his\u00a0graduation from the prestigious\u00a0Rochester Institute of Photography in New York,<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and only a\u00a0mail correspondence certificate in Journalism from the University of Chicago<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(ahead of his time now!),\u00a0no one could question his ability to write with such\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>insight, clarity and truthfulness<\/strong><\/span>.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

\u00a0Retirement Age -Not for Long<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

At age 65, Milan thought he would retire to Tucson, Aarizona, and spend the rest of his days pursuing his photographic hobbies, but retirement has been short lived.\u00a0 Soon after establishing his roots in the Arizona desert area, he was traveling throughout the western parts of the United States, gathering information for his new book\u00a0EARLY DAYS: SERBIAN SETTLERS IN AMERICA.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Milan long lamented the lack of any kind of Reference material on American Serbs.\u00a0 Scouring libraries and well-known research centers like the ones in Utah, did nothing to help with his scholarship,\u00a0but did further ignite his desire to make his first-hand work a reality.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0With his unprescenedent history of American Serbs,\u00a0EARLY DAYS, SERBIAN SETTLERS IN AMERICA, Milan has contributed a\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0distinguished service to all Americans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

As readers, we meet the hard-working, brave, prudent and honorable men and women who helped build America as much as those who laid her rails, dug up her minerals, and forged the steel for her industrial engine, which, indeed, the immigrants of all nationalities did in conjuction.<\/span><\/p>

Here is a paragraph from a chapter of Milan’s own boyhood that mirrors the times and lives of many immigrants then:<\/span><\/p>

…..\u00a0The TIMES were good ethically.\u00a0 Everyone was\u00a0‘po\u0161ten’ (honest).<\/span><\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0The deals were sealed with a mere handshake.\u00a0 A given word was their bond…“moja beseda je zlatno.”<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(my word is like gold).\u00a0 \u00a0People freely borrowed from one another, certain of repayment–or more–in kind.\u00a0 Compatriots Ivanovich, Milkovich and Trbovich carried the Serbs in the time of need.\u00a0 Samojilo’s (Milan’s father) need was so great during the Depression, it took him two years to pay his bill with Ivanovich, which event he then celebrated as a second\u00a0Slava<\/span>\u00a0(the most important religious holdiay\/feast for Serbian families),\u00a0inviting over the entire neighborhood, including the cop on the beat and the postman!”<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

A Labor of Love<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

So Today’s Children<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Can Show Their Children<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Karlo’s own memories are but a minute part of the book.\u00a0 The first part of a proposed three part study deals mainly with the life and times of the first settlers in the West.\u00a0The author traveled more than 100,000 miles back and forth over the last five years in the quest for first hand material and pictures through the states of Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Washington, California and Texas.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The book features\u00a0gem-like\u00a0 quality stories<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0of Serbs in America: small merchants, pool room owners, fruit peddlers, miners and suppliers and followers of the Californian and Alaskan gold rushes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

There are stories of successful lawyers, educators and political leaders, and\u00a0 contractors\u00a0 who\u00a0contribute their rise to prominence on the love and sacrifices their parents made for them.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0It is a book for every Serbian family’s home.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Milan said the book was written\u00a0so that today’s children can show their children.\u00a0 It was a labor of love.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 “The Serbs, we believe,” he writes, “as the Greeks, Italians, Poles and others Slavs and Mexicans, could teach the world of\u00a0enduring family values, virtue and the highest of morals, honestry, truth and integrity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Story Letter Continued from Left hand column:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Milan Karlo has done many other things as\u00a0labors of love for his Serbian people.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0He has produced many “Spomenicas” or souvenir booklets for various church groups, and charity organizations throughout the years.\u00a0 Milan’s photographs, for the most part, were paid for with his own time and money, but they invoke precious memories of young and old alike.<\/span><\/p>

American SERB LIFE magazine<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

An earlier labor of love project was Milan’s publication of the\u00a0American SERB LIFE<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, a magazine that would preserve Serbian heritage for his fellow American Serbs.\u00a0 Although the idea was good, the magazine was short-lived because Serbians at that time were too poor to support a 35 cent magazine in 1948,\u00a0 and it died befor a year had passed, costing the editor and his wife, Laura Karlo, $6,000\u00a0 of their own money invested.<\/span><\/p>

YET, the people who DID subscribe were grateful for the publication, as evidenced here in comments from the Letter Box section of\u00a0February, 1948:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

“A great movement!\u00a0 I hope it will weld ever closer our youth.”<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Milena Boljarevich, Philadelphia, PA.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

“I am so happy over the debut of ‘A.S. Life!’ Anything I can do, let me know.”<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Sam Postin, Detroit, Michigan.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Duty-bound for the sake of my three children to subscribe…<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Theodore Zivkovic, Powhattan Point, Ohio.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

“The field you are trying to cover is very important and beneficial to the cause of Americans of Serbian descent, becasue it will bring them closer for many worthwhile undertakings.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>L. M. Peyovich, Chicago, IL.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Authors who contributed to\u00a0American SERB LIFE<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0then are well-known in other fields now:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Helen Delich<\/strong><\/span>, who wrote about life in the copper mines of Nevada, is now U.S. Congresswoman Helen Delich Bentley and<\/span><\/p>

American SERB LIFE sportswriter\u00a0Vic Danilov<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0is the Director of the Chicago’s Heard Museum.<\/span><\/p>

John Mamula<\/strong><\/span>, a prominent lawyer from Clairton, PA has since passed away.<\/span><\/p>

BEST OF ALL!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Thank goodness A. S. Life’s lifeline was long enough to include\u00a0three installments of Nick Lalich’s personal diary: “I was With Mihailovich.”<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Lalich was an O.S.S. (Office of Strategic Services) Captain in charge of\u00a0a special mission to evacuate U.S. Airmen from Mihailovich-controlled Serbia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

The Diary tells the\u00a0“inside story”<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0dramatic rescue<\/span>\u00a0of 500 U.S. flyers from Axis-encircled Serbia in 1944.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Because of the diary, American Serbs have undisputable proof as to why\u00a0President Truman<\/span>\u00a0awarded\u00a0General Draza Mihailovich<\/span>\u00a0the Legion of Merit Medal posthumously.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Otherwise, the story might have been lost to researchers forever!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0<\/p>

Deserving Milan Karlo<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

YES.\u00a0 Milan Karlo is deaf, totally deaf, with no hearing aid available for his kind of deafness.\u00a0\u00a0And yet, Milan Karlo has been the eyes and ears of the Serbian people in America for over 60 years, devoting his life to recording their history and promoting their culture.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

He has struggled against all odds to provide us with a visual history of American Serb life.\u00a0 The pictures and stories he has captured are similar to a prized, heirloomed quilt, a pictoral patchwork sewn together by\u00a0LOVE, PATIENCE, and HARD WORK.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Milan Karlo has autographed his signature on American Serb history.\u00a0\u00a0Let us now recognize his unselfish contributions by proclaiming him the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Awardee for the Serbian people.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Addendum:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Milan was the oldest of nine children (Milan, George, Milka, Milovan (Blackie) Anka, Ljeposava (Joyce), Sava (Sam), Draga.<\/p>

George died at age two, leaving eight children to be raised by American Serb immigrants,\u00a0Stana and Samojilo Karajlovich.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Both of Milan’s parents were born in the\u00a0Primishlje village of the Slunj area of Kordun, Yugoslavia.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>

Samojilo was the son of a Federal policeman (akin to our American FBI).\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>

Samojilo settled in Pittsburgh’s South Side around 1906. A few years later, the steelworker sent for his “picture bride” Stana, of the same age, but who told him she was several years younger for fear of rejection.<\/p>

Milan has three daughters.<\/p>

The eldest,\u00a0Milana,<\/strong>\u00a0is an elementary teacher of the Gifted and Talented in Sewickley, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>

His middle daugher,\u00a0Rose,<\/strong>\u00a0is a psychologist in Georgia , who served with the American Red Cross in Viet Nam in 1967 and then again in\u00a0 1969 as Director of Operations there.\u00a0<\/p>

The third daughter,\u00a0Alexandra,<\/strong>\u00a0is a graduate assistant at the University of Houston, completing an advanced graduate degree in Public Relations.\u00a0<\/p>

(This was all in 1986.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Milan Karlo, the oldest of nine children, was self-educated.\u00a0 Totally deaf by his late teens, nevertheless, he took English composition correspondence courses with the University of Chicago and a news course with the Newspaper Enterprise of New York City while “boo-jacking” newspapers during the Depression.\u00a0 He never let his lack of hearing handicap his abilities.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 From 1938 to 1940, he was sports editor of the late Lou Christopher’s Yugoslav REFLECTOR magazine, then was the English Section editor of the American SRBOBRAN newspaper of the leading Serb National Federation fraternal with a circulation then of 14,500.\u00a0 In 1944, he joined the copy desk of the San Francisco CHRONICLE, but quit his job in 1946 rather than print what he knew had to be lies about General Draza Mihailovich.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1948, he started up his own monthly AMERICAN-SERB LIFE magazine which was well-received, but lacked finances.\u00a0 He returned to the SRBOBRAN in the 1950s and stayed there until 1965.\u00a0 In the meanwhile, he graduated from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Photography in New York and operated his own photo studio while also doing custom negative and print processing the the leading Pittsburgh Photo Lab Company.\u00a0 Together with his wife, Laura Mamula Karlo, he also operated Karlo’s Confectionary, one of the leading book and magazine stores at 25th and Carson Streets on Pittsburgh’s South Side.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In\u00a01958, the Pittsburgh Press<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0newspaper wrote a feature article on Milan appearing in the Sunday, Nov. 16th edition, written by Press Staff Writer Leonard Thompson, and entitled,\u00a0“His Eyes Are His Ears.”<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Milana Karlo Bizic wrote on the occasion of the building the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh well before its dedication in 1991:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

I\u00a0was born in the alleyway of 26th and Carey Way to Milan and Laura (Mamula) Karlo. We subsequently lived a 1\/2 block away when we owned Karlo’s Confectionery on South 27th Street, a perfect location, as it was only 1 block away from the Jones and Laughlin (J&L) Mill gate. We sold newspapers, magazines, cigarettes, toys, candy and had a soda fountain too. We always attended the St. Sava Serbian Orthodox Church on South 21st and Sidney Streets, where my maternal grandparents were members. At one time, both sets of my grandparents went to the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church on South 16th Street on Pittsburgh’s South Side, but there was an argument that ensued, and many of the parishioners left and formed St. Sava’s.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Thank God after several decades, the two Pittsburgh churches formed HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL, and although I have attended St. Elijah’s Serbian Orthodox Church in Aliquippa, PA from the time I was married in 1963, I’ll always feel I have one leg in Holy Trinity too, as Pittsburgh St. Sava, will always be a special part of me.

As for growing up, all of my life was spent on the South Side of Pittsburgh, close to family, friends and church, except for two years that we lived in California, when my father, Milan Karlo, worked for the San Francisco Chronicle. He quit his job when the newspaper started downplaying the deeds of\u00a0General Draza Mihailovich<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and substituting Tito’s name instead. Even with a wife and two children to feed, he quit rather than print what he knew had to be lies.\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>At my father’s graveside eulogy, I spoke and said that he never had riches, and yet he have\/bequeathed to us the best of treasures. And that was, to never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in, regardless of the consequences.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0We are all very proud of that and remembered it throughout our lives. That philosophy has served us well so far.<\/span><\/strong>
<\/span><\/p>

Both parents worked extremely hard to further their children’s educations. It was hilarious that after spelling many much harder words, I stumbled on the word \u201chandicapped\u201d and had to sit down at the Pittsburgh Press Spelling Bee. I thought the judges said \u201chandicap.\u201d So I spelled it real cockily as \u201cI knew it!\u201d They were kind and gave me a second chance. \u201cHandicapped,\u201d they emphasized the ending. \u201cOh, just add an \u2018ed!\u201d Again they were kind, asking me to spell it again. And I missed doubling that consonant in my puffed-up buffoonery. But still, I was the last sixth grader down. Every time I look at that ballpoint pen I won (amongst Pittsburgh\u2019s 6-8 graders), I think of my wonderful parents.<\/span><\/p>

I had the best of parents, although both of them were severely handicapped, we three girls (Mim, Rose and Alexandra) never ever thought about it until much later in life.\u00a0

Our Dad, the oldest of nine children-one dying in childhood-was totally deaf from the age of seventeen, with no hearing aid available for his kind of deafness. \u00a0He was an expert lip reader, and graduated from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Photography in NY, although totally deaf. The Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph wrote a story about him with the headlines of “Milan Karlo: The Eyes and Ears of His People.” Dad worked most of his life as the English Section editor of the American SRBOBRAN, a Serbian newspaper located in Oakland, Pittsburgh, and did Photography on the side. Nary a bride got married that didn’t have my Dad as their expert photographer.\u00a0

Our mother Laura, the youngest of seven children (plus three who died in childhood), worked very hard in our “new” Karlo’s Confectionery Store on 25th and Carson Street when we came home from California. (While there, she operated a small grocery store with a gas station, and then later, worked for Kaiser, teaching the women who fled the Dust Bowl, how to do data processing). Our store on Carson was much larger than our first store, and again, we had the good fortune of being right across from the beginning of the J&L Mill. We sold newspapers, magazines, candy, cigarettes, had a huge ice cream counter, pin ball machines, and a dry cleaning business in the back. We all helped in the store. But our Mom was the mainstay. I remember her working all day in the store, then about ten minutes to four, she would leave our Aunt Josephine in charge of the store, and go to work at the Plastic Factory two blocks away. My father would come home from work about 5:00 and take over watching the store until we closed at 9:00. At midnight, our Mom would come home from the factory and mop the huge floor of our store, getting it ready to open for the next day. On Saturdays, our Mom, Rose and I would go and clean the offices of Stylette Plastics. Later, my Mom became their office secretary.<\/span><\/p>

Both parents were firm in their belief as Serbian Orthodox Christians, as were their parents. Our grandparents always made sure we knew who we were and what we stood for, and how many were martyred for the faith from the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 on. I remember a T-shirt with the words,\u00a0“Ja Sam Ko Sam, i Volim STO sam.” — I am who I am, and I LIKE who I am.<\/span>”\u00a0 We were always, ALWAYS proud to be Serbian Orthodox Christians.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

The Ears and Eyes of His People<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>

\u00a0It didn’t matter whether it was WWI or a local basketball tournament, if it involved Serbians or Serbian Americans, chances are Milan Karlo wrote about it.\u00a0 Mr. Karlo, who was deaf, spent much of his time traveling across the U.S. and Canada photographing and writing about his people.\u00a0 “I never met a man so determined, so devoted to a cause,” said Robert Rade Stone, Mr. Karlo’s friend and editor of the American SRBOBRAN.\u00a0 “He would go to events, get quips from everybody and write,” Stone said.\u00a0 “He was a rather tremendous writer.\u00a0 He served this organization well, and he served our people across the country well.”<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1962, Milan Karlo was singled out for his countless hours of voluntary service to Shadeland (Springboro, PA).\u00a0 For the Shadeland souvenir booklet printed in 1962, Milan took over 1,000 photos, including prize portraits of the old men at the Home, the young campers and hard workers, the animals, the picnic grounds, etc.\u00a0\u00a0“He is known to young and old, both at Shadeland and throughout our colonies for he is somehow always there, silently observing, documenting on film, and expressing an enthusiastic ‘Oh boy!’ when big plans are unfolded. Similarly, he is quick to register displeasure when a group indicates a reluctance to “Think big, do big,’ as he wonderfully puts it, “<\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0the grateful publishers of the\u00a0Spomenica<\/strong><\/em><\/span>\u00a0wrote.<\/span><\/p>

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In 1965 he founded the weeked\u00a0OBSERVER<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0newspaper of the original Serbian Orhtodox Diocese in Libertyville, Illinois and stayed there until his retirement at age 65 in 1978.\u00a0 He and his 2nd wife, Helen Vukovich (married 4\/6\/69), moved to Tucson, Arizona, and finally to New Mimbres, New Mexico, where he passed away in 1995.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

His book,\u00a0EARLY DAYS: SERBIAN SETTLERS IN AMERICA<\/strong><\/span><\/em>, published along with his wife Helen in 1984, was the culmination of research that covered 4 years and more than 100,000 miles of travel.\u00a0 He financed the book himself in the burning desire to leave something for future generations of the Serbian pioneer history never recorded, and to pay just due homage to the memory of his parents, Samojilo and Stana (Batalo) Karajlovich, of Pittsburgh.\u00a0 The book is filled with over a thousand of his own photographs.<\/span><\/p>

There was a nice article written about Milan M. Karlo in the American SRBOBRAN by Vaso Mihailovich, as Writer #64 in his famous SERBIAN AMERICAN writer series, published in the Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003 edition.<\/span><\/p>

Milan M. Karlo was one of the most enthusiastic writers among the American-born Serbs. Born on March 7, 1913, as the oldest of nine children in the family of Serb immigrants, he went through the typical experiences of a Serbian youth in the life of a colony and the church. He developed an early liking for sports and covered as a reporter many Serbian sport events. Although suffering from a severe hearing impairment, he managed to write for newspapers in New York and San Francisco, among others.<\/span><\/p>

He also wrote for Serbian magazines and founded his own, American-Serb Life, in 1948, and the Observer twenty years later.<\/span><\/p>

In the late 1930’s he became an editor of the English section of American Srbobran, which he did again in the 1950’s till 1965. Thus he truly became “the eyes and ears of his people.’<\/span><\/p>

More importantly, he was an avid defender of Serbdom, as illustrated by his quitting the job at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1946 rather than print lies about General Draza Mihailovich.<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>

After graduating from Rochester Institute of Photography in New York, he had his own studio in Pittsburgh, where he had also a book and magazine store, Karlo’s Confectionary.<\/span><\/p>

Revered and rewarded for his multi-faceted contributions to Serbian affairs, he retired in 1978, although never completely stopping his work on Serbianna which he had pursued for almost sixty years, and for which he was nominated for the Ellis Island Medal of Honor Award.<\/span><\/p>

He died in New Mexico on December 8, 1995. Karlo’s crowning achievement is the book,\u00a0Early Days: Serbian Settlers in America<\/span>\u00a0(1984), which he wrote with his second wife, Helen Vukovich Karlo, and published in Tucson, Arizona.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Encompassing a research of four years and over 100,000 miles of travel, the book contributes to the history of the immigration of the Serbs. The book is also illustrated by over a thousand of Milan’s own photographs, thus offering not only the written account but also a pictorial presentation of the settlers.<\/span><\/p>

With this book Milan and Helen paid homage to their parents and left for their siblings and all descendants of the Serbian settlers, something to remind them of their ancestors. Below are excerpts from this book.<\/span><\/p>

“The first significant immigration of Serbians in America occurred in the 1830’s to the New Orleans area. The settlers were tradesmen, linguists and sailors drawn from Yugoslavia s Adriatic coast. Bokans, Dalmatians and Montenegrin Serbs, they were well educated and often bilingual, which made their success and absorption easy. Few were poor.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>

“Among the more notable, as mentioned by countless historians, was the attorney, George Fisher, who later became a plantation owner, then a respected jurist in San Francisco. Another was prominent in the Confederate Army.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>

“When gold was discovered in 1849, many of these New Orleans Serbs formed the vanguard for the California Gold Rush, including the parents of the subsequently illustrious missionary priest, Archimandrite Sebastian Dabovich. His parents had crossed the Isthmus of Panama on a donkey.<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>

“Another New Orleans-based group fanned out to the industrial Mid-West: to the packing houses and farms in St. Louis, Kansas City and Chicago, where a large fraternal order later was to be organized and would serve as impetus for other migrations and the presentation of national customs, traditions and ideals. . . .<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/p>

“Most of the Serbs not in the goldfields were small merchants, poolroom owners, fruit peddlers and suppliers. As the gold fever spread East to Nevada, and then North to Alaska and the Klondike, they followed the miners, whose ranks now also included many Austro-Hungarian subjects from the seized provinces of Herzegovina-Bosnia, and a few Lichani from other Dual Monarchy territories in what is now Northern Yugoslavia. Few of the miners struck it rich, but the tradesmen prospered. Their large families and tight clannishness helped them cope with the vicissitudes of the then wide- open West. The book\u00a0EARLY DAYS, Serbian Settlers in America: Their Life and Times<\/strong>\u00a0was written by my late father, Milan M. Karlo and his 2nd wife, Helen V. Karlo, who also recently passed away 2\/27\/10. \u00a0Vjecnaja Pamjat. Memory Eternal.<\/span><\/p>

This very precious piece of history documenting the FIRST Serbian Immigrants in the United States and Canada represents a tremendous amount of research work.\u00a0 The couple traveled over 100,000 miles over a period of four years to collect the wonderful stories found in this incredible book.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The book contains over a thousand of photos Milan took himself, then processed all by hand repeatedly until he had just the right sharpness. How much easier his work would have been now with the advent of the digital cameras and the ability to layout and print your work.<\/span><\/p>

This book was published in 1984, but is considered a true classic portraying the western area Serbian immigrants and their successes.<\/span><\/p>

Milan was the oldest of nine children, self-educated with correspondence courses from the University of Chicago and New York City due to his lack of hearing.<\/span><\/p>

From 1938 to 1940, he was sports editor of the late Lou Christopher’s\u00a0 Yugoslav REFLECTOR magazine, then the English Section editor of the prestigious SRBOBRAN newspaper of the leading Serb National Fedeartion fraternal with a peak circulation of 14, 500.\u00a0 In 1944 he joined the copy desk of the San Francisco CHRONICLE daily, returning to the SRBOBRAN in 1946.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 1948 he started up his own monthly American SERB LIFE magazine which was well-received, but lacked finances.\u00a0 He returned to the SRBORAN in the 1950’s and stayed there until 1965.\u00a0 In the meantime, he had also graduated from the prestigious Rochester Institute of Photography in New York and operated his own studio while also doing custom negative and print processing for the leading Pittsburgh Photo Lab Co.<\/span><\/p>

In 1965 he founded the weekly OBSERVER newspaper of the original Serbian Orthodox Diocese in Libertyville, IL and stayed there until retirement at age 65.\u00a0 He and his wife Helen spent any spare time researching, traveling and gathering the materials found here in this book.<\/span><\/p>

Helen Vukovich Karlo was educated at Temple University School for Nursing and served in the South Pacific with the Army in WWII with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.\u00a0 Thereafter, she workerd for Veterans Hospitals in Chicago, Pittsburgh and Tucson for 32 years as head nurse.\u00a0 She was Director of Nurse Education of the Condell Hospital in Libertyville for 10 years prior to retirement.<\/span><\/p>

Helen was the “Ears” for her husband in their continuing quests.\u00a0 They shared a burning desire to leave something for future generations of a Serbian pioneer history never recorded, and pay just due homage to the memory of their parents, Samojilo and Stana Karaljovich of Pittsburgh’s South Side, and Dragic and Helen Vukovich of Johnstown, PA.<\/span><\/p>
